Relic of Saint Jude Thaddeus will be enthroned in the first sanctuary dedicated to the apostle in Latin America

This Wednesday, May 22, a first-degree relic of Saint Jude Thaddeus will be enthroned in the first sanctuary dedicated to the apostle in Latin America, which is located in the Diocese of Sonsón-Rionegro (Colombia).

“We are very happy, our basilica is getting ready to be the home of a small fragment of the body of the Apostle and Martyr Saint Jude Thaddeus, our patron and lawyer for desperate cases,” it was announced from the Instagram account of the Sanctuary Basilica of Saint Jude. Thaddeus.

It is a small bone fragment of the apostle that will be enthroned during the Mass that will be presided at 3:00 p.m. by the Bishop of Sonsón Rionegro, Mons. Fidel León Cadavid.

OK to the programPreviously, there will be a procession from the Nuestra Señora de Chiquinquirá parish to the sanctuary, in which the relic and image of San Judas Tadeo will be carried.

In statements released by RCN Radiothe parish priest of the basilica, Fr. Luis Ferney López Giménez, indicated that “this shrine is in honor of St. Jude Tadeo since 1988” and “is the first shrine in Latin America consecrated to St. Jude Tadeo”.

“It is a sanctuary to which people come to him since he is the patron saint of difficult and desperate cases,” he said.

The history of the sanctuary

The church dedicated to San Judas Tadeo started to be built in 1898, encouraged by the devotion of the Colombian educator Eusebio María Gómez Ramírez, in gratitude to the apostle for the recovery of money that had been lost. The temple was completed in 1935.

In November 1988, the Bishop of Sonsón-Rionegro, Mons. Alfonso Uribe, granted it the title of diocesan sanctuary, and in March 2018 it was elevated to the dignity of minor basilica.
