Despite having missed the opportunity to add another 1-2 in the Italian Grand Prix won by Charles LeclercMcLaren took second and third place and is getting closer to catching Red Bull in the constructors’ table. Now, the pilots will see each other in the Formula 1 Azerbaijan GP, stipulated for the weekend between Friday the 13th and Sunday the 15th of September.
It will also be an important test for the Argentine pilot Franco Colapintowho after his debut in the Williams team at the Italian GP will have to go out on the track on a circuit he does not know, given that his entire career prior to his arrival in F1 took place on circuits in Europe.
Everything would seem to indicate that times of change are approaching in the ranks of Formula 1. Despite the absolute dominance that Red Bull had over the last three seasons, with Max Verstappen winning three consecutive championships, the McLaren cars come being faster for several dates.
Although McLaren has not yet managed to capitalize on the superiority of its cars with victories for Lando Norris (Mad Max’s main pursuer in the drivers’ table) and Oscar Piastri, the consistency of both drivers allows them to be excited about obtaining the constructors’ championship: Red Bull leads with 446 points, followed by McLaren (437) and Ferrari (407)which comes from adding a new victory at the hands of Charles Leclerc.
In Italy, Norris once again took pole position, but lost the lead again on the first lap of the race. Those who took advantage of the bad start were Piastri and Leclerc, who managed to pass him in a matter of seconds.
This lack of forcefulness from Norris, added to McLaren’s lowering of the line that tells its drivers to fight for victory and not let themselves pass to score more points, It allows Verstappen to remain at the top of the tournament, despite the enormous irregularity that Red Bull is experiencing.
“Last year we had a great car, the most dominant in history, and we basically turned it into a monster, so we have to turn it around,” declared the current three-time Formula 1 champion at the end of the race.
For its part, Franco Colapinto made his debut in the highest category of motorsport. The Argentine exceeded the expectations of locals and strangers and took 12th place, a few seconds behind his teammate Alex Albon, who came 10th and once again scored points for the team.
James Vowles, Williams team manager, spoke about Colapinto’s good performance after the Italian GP: “Finishing a few seconds behind Alex (Albon), whose difference was made in the first stint, when he qualified out of position “It’s a good result. He did everything he had to do correctly, at the beginning he didn’t lose position and he did a good job at the pit stop.”
