President of the CEE asks for elections for complaints of corruption in government

The president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE), Mons. Luis Argüello, requested the anticipation of the general elections in Spain before the complaints of corruption in the government chaired by Pedro Sánchez.

For the Archbishop of Valladolid, the best way to channel the political situation in Spain goes through “giving voice to the citizens themselves”, referring to an early electoral call two years at the end of the current legislature, provided for in 2027.

In a recent interview with the newspaper ABCthe prelate came to this conclusion after expressing that the country suffers “a political situation that, in part, is also judicial, and that I consider intolerable.”

For months, but especially in the last hours, the news about possible acts of corruption in the direction of the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), the main party of the Government Coalition, have forced Sánchez, also general secretary of the training, to force the resignation of the Secretary of Organization, Santos Cerdán.

The same had to do Sanchez with the predecessor of Cerdán, José Luis Ábalos, and for the same reason: information and judicial actions that point to his participation in an alleged corrupt plot.

To this, it is necessary that the Government has systematically disqualified the judges who are investigating other plots that affect the president’s wife, Begoña Gómez, who have led the General Council of the Judiciary to demonstrate against the Executive.

“The situation that we live in Spain shows to what extent is a strong alarm bell to respect the rules of the game. Let’s say that the inexcusable reference point goes through respect for the division of powers and the independence of the judges, to the investigations that the judicial police are called UCO (Central Operational Unit of the Civil Guard, responsible for investigating criminal organizations) or in any other way, to the police Instruction processes with the judges and the courts of justice, ”said Mons. Argüello.

On the requests for forgiveness expressed by Pedro Sánchez at the headquarters of his party last Thursday, after a UCO report on the seemingly corrupt activities in the PSOE, the president of the EEC said that “it is a humanly recognizable gesture”, but for political effects, “irrelevant.”

“The most surprising thing about the situation we are living in these days is that they have been the last two secretaries of organization of a political party, so that the institutional significance goes beyond the personal. That is why, although the request for forgiveness is always a valuable event, there is an institutional dimension that needs to be addressed and that must be consistent with the same request for forgiveness,” he added, before asking for the call of elections.
