Pope Leo XIV will preside on Monday the opening mass of the 188th General Chapter of the Order of San Agustín, which will be held in Rome and will choose the new general of the religious family to which the Holy Father belongs.
The Eucharist of opening the works will be in the Basilica of San Agustín, in Campo Marzio, at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 1, on the anniversary of Pope Leo XIV’s entry to the novitiate, an event that took place in 1977.

Recently, Pope Leo XIV received the Medal of San Agustín, granted by the Augustinian province of San Tomás de Villanueva (United States), the maximum award that the order grants to those who embody the spirit and teachings of St. Augustine, living with a deep commitment to truth, unity and charity.
In a video store transmitted on August 28, Fiesta de San Agustín, the Holy Father deeply thanked the gesture and said: “Being recognized as Augustine is an honor that I keep very close to the heart. Much of what I am I owe it to the spirit and the teachings of St. Augustine.”
The General Chapter will be developed in the Pontifical Patristical Institute Augustinianum and will feature a hundred Augustinian religious.
The works will last until September 18. There are 73 delegates, from 46 countries, who will be entitled to vote in the election of the general, representing the 2341 Augustinians present in the 41 constituencies of the order in the world.
The election will determine the 98th Prior General, after 12 years of Government of Fr. Alejandro Moral, who has completed his second cycle at the head of the Order.
