Pope Leo XIV names a new auxiliary bishop for the archdiocese of Bogotá

Pope Leo XIV has appointed P. Germán Humberto Barbosa Mora as a new auxiliary bishop of Bogotá, who has “an important experience in the formation of new priests and in university education,” said the Colombian Episcopate.

The elected bishop is 50 years old and comes from the Diocese of Engativá and also has more than two decades of ministry and a solid theological preparation.

With his appointment, Fr. Barbosa Mora will join the auxiliary bishops Alejandro Díaz García and Edwin Raúl Vanegas Cuervo, to support the work of the archbishop of Bogotá, Cardinal Luis José Rueda Aparicio.

Biography of P. Germán Barbosa

Fr. Germán Humberto Barbosa Mora was born in Bogotá on December 24, 1974. After culminating high school, he entered the Major Seminary of Bogotá, where his formation culminated and was ordered priest for this archdiocese primed on December 2, 2000.

The following year, with the erection of the Diocese of Engativá, Fr. Germán Barbosa was incardinated in that ecclesiastical jurisdiction, where he developed his pastoral work.

The new auxiliary bishop has a doctorate in moral theology obtained at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, with a thesis on the ethical dimension of social networks in interpersonal relationships.

According to a note published on the episcopate website, Fr. Barbosa “has assumed an active role in the formation of priests and permanent deacons” and exercised as a vocational animation trainer and delegate in the Major Seminar of Bogotá and as director of the San Lorenzo Seminary House in Cota.

He has also been a teacher at the San Buenaventura University, Unimonserrate, Unicervantes and the University of Santo Tomás.

Since 2019, the elected auxiliary bishop serves as Episcopal Vicar of the Vicaría Nuestra Señora del Rosario, a member of the Episcopal Council of the Diocese of Engativá and pastor of the Divine Grace parish.
