Pope Francis expressed his deep regret for the tragic accident in the north of Guatemala City where on Monday, February 10, a bus lost control and fell into a river of wastewater to the banks of a community of limited resources, leaving 54 dead and dozens of injured.
Through a telegram sent in his name by the Secretary of State of the Vatican, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pontiff expressed his solidarity with the affected families and secured his prayers for the eternal rest of the deceased.

“The Holy Father, vividly sorry to know the painful news of the fall of a bus in a precipice in Guatemala City, which has caused numerous victims and injured, offers suffrages for the eternal rest of the deceased,” reads the Message addressed to the archbishop of Santiago de Guatemala, Mons. Gonzalo de Villa and Vásquez.
Pope Francis also transmitted his “condolences to the relatives of the deceased, along with his expressions of comfort, live request and wishes suddenly restoration of the injured.” In addition, she taught her “comforting apostolic blessing, as a sign of hope in the risen Lord.”
