Pope Francis on the Swiss Guard: I like that they have children, that they have a family

This morning, Pope Francis highlighted the value of members of the Swiss Guard, the military body that has guarded the Pontiff since the 16th century, to marry, start a family and have children, highlighting the relevance of family life in his service.

“I like the fact that guards get married; I like that they have children, that they have a family. This is very important, very important. This aspect has become very relevant, since the number of guards married with children has increased, and the well-being of families is of fundamental importance for the Church and society,” he stated this January 18 from the Vatican Apostolic Palace.

These words were spoken by the Holy Father when he received in audience the president and members of the Council of the Foundation of the Pontifical Swiss Guard on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. In his speech, the Pope underlined the profound meaning of this milestone, which coincides with the Jubilee of Hope 2025 that has just begun.

“I extend a warm welcome to all of you. 25 years ago, during the great Jubilee of the year 2000, the Pontifical Foundation of the Swiss Guard was established. Now another Jubilee Year has begun, which happily coincides with the celebration of its 25th anniversary,” he highlighted.

The Holy Father also highlighted the work of the Pontifical Foundation of the Swiss Guard in providing comprehensive support to the guards and their families. “Your Foundation supports the guards in various ways and areas: first of all, it acts in favor of families, especially with regard to the education and training of children in appropriate schools. In addition, it provides the means to guarantee, improve and update professionalism, work methods, equipment and infrastructure,” he explained.

Furthermore, Pope Francis emphasized the value of the service of the Swiss Guard, not only as protectors of the Pope, but also as an example of patience and welcome for pilgrims arriving at the Vatican.

“Over time, the work of the Swiss Guard has changed considerably, but its objective always remains to protect the Pope. This also includes contributing to the welcome of the many pilgrims from all over the world who wish to meet him. And this requires patience, and the guards have it! “Well done!” he expressed with gratitude.

Likewise, the Pope made reference to the support that the Foundation provides to former guards once they conclude their service in the Vatican.

“They offer valuable assistance to all those who, after their service in the Vatican, return home. I am in contact with some of them who remain very, very close to the Vatican, to the Church. Sometimes they call on the phone, send something; When they come to Rome, they visit me,” he shared.

Before concluding, Pope Francis urged those present to continue their important work. “The cooperation between your Foundation and the Pontifical Swiss Guard is exemplary, because it shows that no reality can advance alone. It is important to collaborate. “We must all help and support each other,” he recalled.

Finally, the Pontiff expressed his gratitude and prayers for the Foundation and the guards. “I want to express my sincere gratitude for the generous support you have provided over these twenty-five years. Thank you, thank you very much! I ask you to pray for me, and I also assure you of my memory in prayer for you and your intentions,” he concluded before giving his blessing.
