In addition to this message, Pope Francis also wrote a letter to the bishops participating in the meetingin which he denounced “the indifference that bloody Darién.”
In his letter, published on March 20, the Holy Father lamented the suffering of the migrants who arrive at that place, where “the migrant brothers and sisters await us, on the earth’s shore of a sea of tears and death that unites men and women, adults and children from the most different latitudes.”
Likewise, he defined the Darién as “a jungle that is a triumph of nature but that today becomes a true via crucis that not only highlights the limits of migration governance in the Western Hemisphere, but also fuels a prosperous business that allows accumulating illicit profits from human trafficking.”
