Pope Francis continues with treatment to treat respiratory infection; Its conditions are stable

Pope Francis, 88, hospitalized in the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome due to persistent bronchitis, continues with the pharmacological therapy prescribed by the medical team to stop the infection present in the respiratory tract.

According to the last medical part, released by the director of the Vatican Press Office, Matteo Bruni, the Holy Father “rested well during the night.”

In this regard, he informed that he maintains “stable clinical conditions” and that he continues with “the treatment prescribed by the medical team”.

This morning, Pope Francis “received the Eucharist and followed the Holy Mass through television.” On the other hand, in the afternoon, “she alternated reading and rest,” Bruni briefly detailed.

Due to the need for “absolute rest” to recover, Pope Francis did not pronounce the prayer of the Angelus this Sunday.

However, the Vatican released his written message, in which he thanked the signs of affection and affection received during his hospitalization, as well as the care and attention provided by the health personnel.

The 88 -year -old pontiff wanted to join the Marian prayer spiritually and direct a special message to the faithful, expressing their gratitude and asking for prayers for peace in the world.

In his message, he recalled the Mass, held in his name the prefect of the Dicastering per culture and education, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, in the Basilica of San Pedro on the occasion of the jubilee of the artists.

“I thank Dicasterio for culture and education for preparing this event, which reminds us of the importance of art as a universal language that disseminates beauty and unites peoples, contributing to bring harmony to the world and to silence all the screams of war” , he said.

Pope Francis regretted below not being present in the celebration for his health problems.

“I would have liked to be among you, but, as you know, I am here at the Gemelli Hospital because I still need treatment for my bronchitis,” he explained.

The Pontiff also renewed his call to peace in various conflicting regions of the world.

Although he has shown signs of improvement and is responding well to antibiotics, the pontiff’s agenda has been suspended at least until Monday. In any case, it is not yet known whether next week will continue hospitalized or can return to the Vatican.

This is the fourth hospitalization of Pope Francis in the Gemelli Polyclinic. The last time was at the end of March 2023, when the Pontiff was admitted to the hospital because of another bronchitis, which was also treated with antibiotics.

On that occasion, he was hospitalized for three days, which generated a generalized concern that fed the speculations that he could choose to retire instead of remaining in the position for life, a decision that made his predecessor, Benedict XVI.

The Vatican Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, then settled the assumptions about the Pope’s health status by arguing that on Thursday he had maintained a tight schedule and that he was simply “tired.”

Pope Francis has suffered in the last years of health problems in the last year, from persistent pain in the right knee, a painful gonalgia caused in turn by an osteoarthritis, until his recent hospitalization due to respiratory problems.
