According to the latest report from October by the Nicaraguan researcher and lawyer Martha Patricia Molina, titled Nicaragua: A persecuted Church?at least 667 attacks have been perpetrated against the Catholic Church between April 2018 and August 2023.
Ortega has remained in power in Nicaragua uninterruptedly since 2007, after disputed re-elections. In January 2022 he began a fifth five-year presidential term.
