Pope Francis appoints two bishops in Colombia

The Holy Father accepted the resignation of Bishop Francisco Antonio Nieto Súa as Bishop of Engativá, at the age of 75. His replacement will be Bishop Germán Medina Acosta, 66 years old, who until now has been Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Bogotá.

Bishop Acosta, born in Bogotá in 1958, has a solid training in theology and psychology, with degrees obtained at the Pontifical Javeriana University and the Pontifical Salesian University of Rome.

He was ordained a priest in 1983, and has served in various roles, including formator and rector of the San José Conciliar Seminary in Bogotá. His career is highlighted by his dedication to the education and formation of future priests, as well as his work in youth ministry and university chaplaincy.

He has also served as a member of the Presbyteral Council, a member of the College of Consultants. In 2017 he was appointed territorial episcopal vicar of San Pedro and general vicar of the Archdiocese of Bogotá.

On July 11, 2021, he was appointed by Pope Francis as Auxiliary Bishop of Bogotá.

Appointment in the Archdiocese of Bogotá

In addition to the appointment in Engativá, Pope Francis appointed Father Edwin Raúl Vanegas Cuervo as Auxiliary Bishop of Bogotá.

Born in Bogotá in 1975, Bishop Vanegas has dedicated his life as a pastor since his priestly ordination in 1999.

Educated at the San José Conciliar Seminary in Bogotá and with a degree in fundamental theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Bishop Vanegas has held various pastoral and administrative roles.

Among these positions is that of parochial vicar, parish priest, member of the archdiocesan Vocational Ministry team. In addition, he has been a trainer and then rector of the San José Conciliar Seminary of Bogotá; among other charges. His most recent position as Episcopal Vicar of the San José Territorial Zone prepared him to assume greater responsibilities.
