Pope Francis has appointed Bishop of Gerona (Spain) the abbot of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Poblet, the Cistercian Mons. Octavi Vilà Mayo, who will take charge of the diocese, replacing its current administrator, Father Lluis Suñer.
The Bishopric of Gerona was in a vacant seat since the death of Mons. Francisco Pardo on April 1, 2022.
Mons. Vilà has governed the Cistercian community of Poblet since 2015. Born in Tarragona in 1961, he has a degree in Geography and History and a diploma in Library Science and Documentation from the University of Barcelona. He has also completed university postgraduate degrees on new information technologies and cultural management. He also has a degree in Systematic Theology from the Faculty of Theology of Catalonia.
