Pope Francis appoints new bishop in Oaxaca, Mexico

Pope Francis today named Father Luis Alfonso Tut Tún, 46 years old and belonging to the clergy of the Archdiocese of Yucatán in Mexico, as the new Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Antequera Oaxaca.

The advertisement performed the Press Office of the Holy See this June 21, and was also disseminated by the Apostolic Nunciature through the General Secretariat of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate.

The Archdiocese of Antequera Oaxaca, located in the state of Oaxaca in southern Mexico, covers an area of ​​18,000 square kilometers and, according to data of the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate, pastorally cares for 1,272,180 Catholic faithful.

Currently, the archdiocese is headed by Bishop Pedro Vásquez Villalobos, who will turn 74 in September.

Who is Father Luis Alfonso Tut Tún?

Luis Alfonso Tut Tún was born on June 22, 1978 in the municipality of Acanceh, in the Mexican state of Yucatán, southeast of Mexico.

At the age of 18 he entered the San Ildefonso de Toledo and Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Yucatán Major Seminary, where he completed his studies in Theology and Philosophy. He was ordained a priest on July 31, 2006.

As a priest, he continued his academic training at the Pontifical Ateneo San Anselmo, a Benedictine university in Rome, Italy, where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Sacramental Theology.

Upon returning to Mexico, Father Tut Tún played various roles. In addition to being a parish priest, he was a professor at the Major Seminary, an advisor to the academy.“Saint Juan Diego”a lay training organization for the best performance of the Church’s pastoral care, and also an advisor to the youth movement “Communion and Liberation.”

In 2009, Fr. Luis Alfonso was sent to Rome to carry out his priestly ministry as an officer of the Dicastery for Bishops in the Roman Curia, an occupation he carried out for 13 years.

Since August 2022, he has been parish priest of the parish of Santa Inés, in the municipality of Akil, Yucatán.
