Pope Francis appoints a new bishop in Venezuela

Pope Francis today named a new bishop for the diocese of La Guairain Venezuela: Bishop Pablo González, 65 years old, current bishop of Guasdualito.

Bishop González succeeds Bishop Raúl Biord Castillo, recently appointed metropolitan archbishop of Caracas, in the diocese of La Guaira.

His appointment is framed in a tense political and social climate in Venezuela, one day before the swearing-in of the next president of the Republic, for the period 2025-2031.

Mons. González was born in the city of San Antonio de los Altos, a few kilometers from Caracas. He has a degree in Education from the Simón Rodríguez University of Caracas and a degree in Pastoral Theology from the Pontifical University of Salamanca in Spain.

He made his perpetual profession as a Salesian religious on September 3, 1983 and was ordained a priest on July 26, 1986.

Since then, he has held various important positions in the Venezuelan Church, as parish priest in San Juan Bosco in Valencia (1995-2002), parish priest in San Francisco de Sales in Caracas (2002-2005) and in San Juan Bosco de Los Teques ( 2005-2008).

In addition, he received episcopal ordination on December 3, 2015, becoming the first bishop of Guasdualito, in the plains of the country. He is also a member of the Permanent Commission of the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV), as well as president of the Episcopal Commission for Culture and Cultural Heritage.
