The Marian fervor and sports spirit joined in Mexico City this March 30, when bishops, priests, religious and faithful put on their sportswear to participate in the first Archdiocesan race to the distinguished and national basilica of Guadalupe.

From the early hours of the day, the runners began to congregate in the esplanade of the basilica. The day began with a Mass presided by Mons. Luis Manuel Pérez, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Mexico.

In his homily, the prelate compared the impetus of the runners to reach the goal with the love of God, who, in his infinite mercy, “runs continuously towards us, heads to our encounter permanently, because he wants our good, he wants our salvation.”

With this reflection and the blessing taught, the participants undertook the route of 3, 5 and 10 kilometers, touring the Guadalupe road, the historic avenue where thousands of pilgrims arrive every year to venerate the Guadalupana.

An effort with purpose

Among the runners, in addition to children, youth and older adults, the auxiliary bishops of the Primada Archdiocese of Mexico stood out: Mons. Salvador González Morales, Mons. Carlos Enrique Samaniego López and Mons. Héctor Mario Pérez Villarreal, who is also general secretary of the Mexican Episcopate Conference.

Beyond physical effort, this Archdiocesan career had a charitable purpose: the funds collected will be allocated to the medical coverage of retired priests.

In addition, the participants had the opportunity to obtain plenary indulgence within the Jubilee Year 2025. The Basilica of Guadalupe has been designated as a jubilee temple, so those who met the established conditions – confession, communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father – could receive this spiritual grace.
