The current name of the movement, “Communion and Liberation” (CL), first appeared in 1969 and the Vatican, under the express wish of Pope John Paul II, recognized the status of Fraternity in 1982.
Don Giussani created this initiative out of his conviction that the Christian event, lived in communion, is the foundation of the authentic liberation of man.
Over time, the groups belonging to this movement dedicated themselves to cultural and charitable works both in Italy and in other countries, works such as the Food Bank, which provides food and accommodation to half a million poor people in Italy or the Pharmaceutical Bank, as well as as solidarity centers for ex-convicts, the unemployed or poor families.
Currently CL is present in around seventy countries on five continents. Mr. Giussani died on February 22, 2005 in Milan.
