When presiding over the Regina Caeli prayer this Sunday, Pope Francis urged the faithful to read and meditate on the Gospel daily, noting that this practice opens the heart to the “voice of the Holy Spirit” and silences all “superficial talk.”
“The Word of God silences our superficial talk and makes us say serious words, beautiful words, happy words (…) Here is how to give space in us to the voice of the Holy Spirit,” pointed out this Sunday, May 19Solemnity of Pentecost, before hundreds of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

The Holy Father highlighted the importance of nourishing yourself daily with the Word of God. “It is precisely the transforming words of love that the Holy Spirit repeats within us,” he stated, adding that these words “cause the same feelings and the same purposes to be born and grow in our hearts.”
To facilitate this practice, he advised the faithful: “Let us have a small, pocket-size Gospel, let us carry it with us and read a passage of the Gospel taking advantage of favorable moments.”
Likewise, he encouraged those present to give space in their lives to the voice of the Holy Spirit through prayer and silent worship. “Let us not forget the prayer of silent adoration,” he added.
Emphasizing the simplicity and accessibility of these practices, the Pope noted: “Reading and meditating on the Gospel, praying in silence, saying good words, these are not difficult things, no, we can all do them. It’s easier than insulting, getting angry… For this reason, he invited the faithful to reflect: “What place do these words have in my life? How can I cultivate them, in order to listen better to the Holy Spirit and be his echo for others?
At the conclusion of his message, Pope Francis invoked the intercession of Mary, present at Pentecost with the apostles, so that believers may be docile to the voice of the Holy Spirit. “May Mary make us docile to the voice of the Holy Spirit,” he asked.
