The old French runner Pascal Hervéwho once wore the ‘pink jersey’ in the 1996 Giro, before being implicated in the Festina case, died on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday at the age of 60, announced the National Union of Professional Cyclists (UNCP). The circumstances of his death were not specified, but last September he revealed that he had undergone surgery for “a cancerous tumor in the stomach” in the middle of the year.
“Pascal was an emblematic figure and an essential voice of our sport. The great cycling family is in mourning,” the French UNCP reacted in X.
The announcement of his death prompted expressions of condolence on social networks from many of his former colleagues, such as Laurent Brochard.
Hervé became infamous in the world of sport for being a member of the Festina team, suspended in 1998 after a long investigation that dismantled an international doping network led by the team director, Bruno Roussel.
Former amateur world champion, Pacal Hervé He had ended his career at the age of 37 after a positive test at the 2001 Giro d’Italia, three years after being suspended for two months for his involvement in the Festina case, along with Richard Virenque, with whom he was a long-time partner.
The French runner was one of the most athletic who was most affected by the scandal and one of the last to appear before the courts to give his testimony, and once he served the sanction he was never able to recover the prestige of his career. After his retirement he dedicated himself to being a coach in Canada, where he finally died.
