Paris 2024 Olympic Games: Catholic Church in Mexico hopes they will promote peace

The Catholic Church in Mexico urged the faithful to consider the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which opened today, as an opportunity to demonstrate that “as humanity, it is possible to live with dignity in the midst of our differences, putting aside conflicts.” and building relationships of brotherhood and peace.”

It’s a statement, the Conference of the Mexican Episcopate (CEM) expressed its “deep admiration and respect” for the athletes who will represent the country in this world sporting event that takes place from July 26 to August 11. The Mexican bishops assured the athletes “of our closeness, affection and prayer.”

The National Commission of Physical Culture and Sports (CONADE) reported that the Mexican delegation has 107 athletes competing in a total of 29 disciplines, of the 45 in dispute in Paris 2024.

The Mexican bishops highlighted that “sport is a human activity full of meaning and virtue,” since it allows people to develop and work on all their talents, both physical and spiritual.

According to the CEM, sport not only involves “mastery, strength and bodily skills,” but also requires “consistency, perseverance, wisdom and grace.”

Furthermore, he stressed that sports exercise involves “the positive and joint management of our most human faculties: intelligence, will, passions, memory and imagination, as well as the necessary sense of concretion and synthesis.”

The statement also highlights sport as “a fundamental educational path for human formation,” and points out that, thanks to these activities, a “dynamic of constant improvement, consolidation of peaceful relationships and, above all, is allowed to emerge. everything noble, true and good in the person.”

Finally, the bishops requested the intercession of the Virgin of Guadalupe so that “our Lord Jesus Christ makes us generous promoters of a more fraternal, just and supportive humanity, through a global educational commitment.”
