Pope Leo XIV expressed his “feeling of regret” for the death of Cardinal Estanislao Karlic, Archbishop Emeritus of Paraná (Argentina), who died on Friday, August 8 at age 99. The purple was the second longest cardinal in the world.
In a telegram sent to Mons. Raúl Martín, Archbishop of Paraná, the Holy Father requested that he transmit his condolences “to those who are part of that beloved ecclesial community” and remembered with gratitude the ministry of who defined as “selfless and complete pastor who, for long years and with great fidelity, delivered his life at the service of God and the church, carrying the light of the gospel to various areas of the Gospel Life and culture ”.

The Pontiff reviewed some milestones of the Ecclesial Service of Cardinal Karlic, who “served as a priest and bishop in the Archdiocese of Córdoba and Paraná, and was president of the Argentine Episcopal Conference during two consecutive periods, receiving my predecessor San Juan Paul II on his apostolic journey to that country”.
Leo XIV also highlighted his contribution to the Catholic Church: “Among many other tasks and pastoral initiatives at local, national and continental level, he generously offered at the service of the Universal Church, being one of the collaborators in the writing of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.”
The Pope thanks God “for his life of faith and his deep love of the Church” and said that offers suffrages “for the eternal rest of his soul, so that the Lord Jesus grants him the crown of glory that does not wither.”
Finally, he entrusted his soul “to the intercession of Our Lady of the Rosary” and sent all “the apostolic blessing, as a sign of Christian hope in the risen Lord.”
