Original image of the Virgin of Fatima will travel to Rome through the jubilee

On the occasion of the Jubilee of Marian spirituality, planned for October 11 and 12, 2025, the original statue of the Virgin of Fatima will be in Rome.

The famous image of the Virgin, known by the faithful around the world and symbol of the “hope that does not disappoint”, will be present among the pilgrims who participate in the Mass in the Plaza de San Pedro, on Sunday, October 12, 2025 at 10:30 (local time), to “further enrich this moment of prayer and reflection.”

This is the fourth time that the statue leaves the Sanctuary of Fatima to travel to Rome, since it only occurs by express request of the Pope. The first was in 1984, on the occasion of the extraordinary jubilee of redemption, when on March 25 San Juan Pablo II consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The second was during the great jubilee of the year 2000 and, the third, in October 2013, on the occasion of the year of faith with Pope Francis.

According to the Dicastery for evangelization in a statement, access to the Plaza de San Pedro for the Eucharistic celebration will be free and entry will not be required. Registration to participate in the jubilee event are already open in the web page and will end on August 10, 2025.

“The presence of the beloved original statue of the Virgin of Fatima will allow each one to experience the proximity of the Virgin Mary,” said the proprietary of the Dicasterio for Evangelization, Mons. Rino Fisichella.

“This is one of the most significant Mariana images for Christians around the world, who, as the Holy Father points out in the jubilee convocation bull Hope you don’t disappointthey venerate it as the ‘most affectionate of mothers, which never abandons their children’. In Fatima, the Virgin told the three little shepherds the same thing that continues to assure each of us: ‘I will never leave you. My Immaculate Heart will be your refuge and the path that will lead you to God, ”added the prelate.

“This statue leaves the sanctuary of Cova da Iria in a totally exceptional way and only at the request of the potatoes,” said the rector of the Sanctuary of Fatima, P. Carlos Cabecinhas.

“At this jubilee time, the Virgin of Fatima is the woman of Easter joy, even in the painful times that the world lives. Once again, the ‘lady dressed in white’ will be a pilgrim of hope and, in Rome, she will be with the ‘bishop dressed in white’, like the shepherds of Fatima affectionately called the Holy Father, “he said.

The sculpture, the work of the Portuguese artist José Ferreira Thedim, was carried out in 1920 and is usually in the chapel of the appearances of the Sanctuary of Fatima.

In that place, between May and October 1917, the Virgin appeared six times to the shepherds Lucía dos Santos, 10 years old, Jacinta Marto, 7, and Francisco Marto, 9 years old.

The statue measures 104 centimeters high and was carved in Cedar of Brazil, following the descriptions given by the three shepherds. It was solemnly crowned on May 13, 1946 and, subsequently, the projectile that wounded San Juan Pablo II in the attack he suffered in 1981 in the Plaza de San Pedro was embedded in the crown.
