Every August 5, the novena begins to Saint Maximilian Kolbe, priest and member of the order of conventual friars minor, who died a martyr in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz.

On July 29, 2016, as part of his trip to Poland, Pope Francis arrived at the so-called “hunger cell” in Auschwitz, where Saint Maximilian Kolbe died. There he prayed in silence for about six minutes.
