Every November 14 we begin the novena in honor of Blessed José Ramón Miguel Agustín Pro Juárez, a native of Guadalupe, Zacatecas (Mexico), born on January 13, 1891.
Blessed Miguel Pro – as he is generally called – was a Jesuit priest, a great defender of religious freedom during the Cristero War (1926-1929), when many Catholics rose up against a State that persecuted them for professing their faith.

In the midst of his pastoral work, the blessed was taken prisoner and sentenced to death. He died executed, without any trial, at the hands of a firing squad of the capital’s police, on November 23, 1927, in Mexico City.
Before dying, Father Miguel Pro raised his prayers to heaven, forgave those who would be his murderers and shouted: “Long live Christ the King!”
