In mid-December, Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora Ortega, Bishop of the Diocese of Siuna, was also kidnapped and imprisoned. In addition, two seminarians were kidnapped along with Mons. Mora, about whom there is no further information. Likewise, Monsignor Óscar Escoto, vicar general of the Diocese of Matagalpa, was kidnapped for a few hours.
Another priest, Father Jader Guido, was kidnapped on December 24 and later released.
The persecution against the Catholic Church by the regime of Daniel Ortega and his wife and vice president, Rosario Murillo, has intensified in recent months. The most emblematic case is that of Mons. Rolando ÁlvarezBishop of the Diocese of Matagalpa, kidnapped and arrested in August 2022 and sentenced in February of this year to more than 26 years in prison, accused of “treason to the country.”
