Mons. Héctor García, new bishop of Santa Rosa de Copán, Honduras

Pope Leo XIV made a new episcopal appointment in Honduras by designating Mons. Héctor David García, as the new bishop of the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán. Until now he served as a bishop of Yoro, where he grazed for 11 years.

Regarding his new mission in Santa Rosa de Copán, he said that, since he received the news, he began “to pray for them (the faithful), to open heart to love them, love them.” And he added that he fully trusts “a path together,” as the Church asks for it, “to be a synodal church, in communion, in participation, in mission.”

The Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán had been without bishop for six months. The Episcopal Headquarters was vacant since December 16, 2024, when Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Mons. Darwin Andino Ramírez, who left the position for health reasons.

Who is Mons. Héctor David García Osorio?

According to the information shared by the Holy See, Mons. Héctor David García Osorio was born in Concepción de María on September 23, 1966.

He studied philosophy and theology at the Major Nuestra Señora de Suyapa Seminar in Tegucigalpa (Honduras), and obtained a degree in spiritual theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome (Italy).

He was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Choluteca on November 8, 1997, where he served in several positions as Chancellor of the Diocesan Curia, Vicar General, rector of the Minor Seminar Pablo VI in Choluteca, deputy secretary of the Episcopal Conference of Honduras; inter alia.

On July 3, 2014 he was appointed Bishop of Yoro and received episcopal ordination on September 20 of the same year. Since November 2023 he has been president of the Episcopal Secretariat of Central America (SEDAC).
