The president of Argentina congratulated Donald Trump, saying that the American can count on his country’s support when he takes over the White House in January next year. “Congratulations on your incredible victory,” wrote Milei on her social media.
A few days before completing 11 months in office, Milei understands that Trump’s return to the Presidency of the United States could transform Argentina into a partner country and privileged interlocutor for the USA in Latin America. Milei supported Trump’s election and has repeated, in her posts on social media and in her statements to the press, that she is contrary to the principles of the left.
With Argentina in debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and trying to negotiate a new agreement with the international organization, the government hopes that Trump can support the country presided over by Milei. The United States has a decisive vote on the Fund.
Furthermore, Milei is fully ideologically in tune with Trump and businessman Elon Musk, who campaigned for the new election of the Republican Party politician. Milei and Musk spoke this Wednesday, to comment on Trump’s victory, as Clarín reports in Spanish.
Last week, Milei fired the now former chancellor Diana Mondino and installed the now former Argentine ambassador to the United States, Gerardo Werthein, as Foreign Minister. Mondino was fired after Argentina’s vote against the US economic blockade of Cuba. The Argentine vote against the blockade was already tradition, but it goes against Milei’s determination for an intense alliance with the USA and Israel – his foreign policy priorities.
This Wednesday, after Trump’s victory, Argentina’s public bonds soared, the dollar fell and the country risk rate (a thermometer for investors) fell even further. The scenario portrays the vibration not only of Milei, but of the financial market with Trump’s election and speculation about possible results for Argentina.
