“We want to walk with Mary, experiencing the experience of disciples of her Son Jesus. Following Jesus, we will surely always be on the right path, transforming our hearts, our minds and our being. Thus, we will be builders of a new humanity, of a new world, of justice, of peace, where it will be possible to experience forgiveness, love and the sharing of bread,” said the rector of the sanctuary, Mons. Nereudo Freire Henrique, according to the website of the Archdiocese of Paraíba.
During the approximately six hours of walking, the faithful expressed their faith, devotion and gratitude to Our Lady of Peña. Many walked barefoot, carrying replicas of their houses, work letters, medical exams and other objects that for them symbolized the graces achieved through the intercession of the Virgin.
Upon arriving at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Peña, the Archbishop of Paraíba, Mons. Manoel Delson Pedreira da Cruz, celebrated the Mass of the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. In his homily, he reflected on the final judgment mentioned in the Gospel of Saint Matthew (Mt 25:31-46). In this passage, Jesus points out that every time someone goes to meet a person who is hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, or in prison, it is Him they serve.
