US Senator Marco Rubio, who is Catholic, asked Pope Francis to “intercede for the release” of Nicaraguan bishop Rolando José Álvarez Lagos, unjustly imprisoned by the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo.
In a carta Addressed to the Holy Father, released on December 13, Rubio, a member of the Republican Party and senator for the state of Florida, wrote: “I humbly ask you to intercede for the release of Bishop Álvarez and the right to worship of all Catholics in Nicaragua ”.
In his letter, the US senator expresses to Pope Francis his “deep concern about the unfair treatment of Bishop José Álvarez Lagos in Nicaragua.”
