Leo XIV will canonize José Gregorio Hernández and Maria del Carmen Rendiles on October 19

Pope Leo XIV will canonize on October 19, eight blessed, including two Venezuelans: José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, considered the “doctor of the poor” and María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, religious and founder of the slaves of Jesus.

This has been confirmed by the press office of the Holy See this Friday after the decision made by the Pontiff in the first session of his pontificate.

In addition to Hernández Cisneros and Carmen Rendiles, very revered figures in Latin America, the Blessed who will be proclaimed in October will be: Ignazio Choukrallah Maloyan, Bishop and Armenian martyr killed in 1915 during the Ottoman genocide; Peter to Rot, a catechist from Papua New Guinea, martyred during the Japanese occupation in World War II; Vincenza Maria Poloni, founder of the Congregation of the Sisters of Mercy of Veronamaria Troncatti, Italian Salesian missionary, known for her work among the indigenous Shuar in Ecuador and Bartolo Longo, Italian lawyer, ex-ESoterist converted to Catholicism, promoter of the prayer of the rosary and founder of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Virgin of the Rosary of Pompeya.

This Consistory, held at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, had originally been summoned by Pope Francis at the end of February, while he was hospitalized, although at that time a specific date was not established for its realization.

In that appointment with Cardinals, Leo XIV also decreed that Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati is canonized along with Blessed Carlo Acutis on Sunday, September 7, 2025. This will be the first canonization ceremony that will preside over the Pontiff.
