Leo XIV will canonize Carlo Acutis on September 7 along with Pier Giorgio Frassati

On Friday, June 13, Pope Leo XIV presided over the first consistory of his pontificate granting the definitive approval for the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis, known as the “cyber and the Eucharist.”

Next to him, the canonizations of another 8 blessed were also confirmed. In the course of the Consistory, the Pope decreed that Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, along with Blessed Carlo Acutis, will be canonized on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

For their part, the Blessed Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan, Peter to Rot, Vincenza Maria Poloni, Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martínez, Maria Troncatti, José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros and Bartolo Longo will be elevated to the altars on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

This Consistory, held at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, had originally been summoned by Pope Francis at the end of February, while he was hospitalized, although at that time a specific date was not established for its realization.

During this solemn meeting, the cardinals also gave their consent for another 8 new blessed are registered in the catalog of the saints.

Among them is Bartolo Longo, an Italian lawyer who, after a past linked to Satanism, fervently embraced the Catholic faith, deeply influenced by the Virgin Mary and the prayer of the Rosary.

Another of the outstanding names is that of Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, remembered with devotion in Venezuela for their generous delivery to the most needy. Blessed Pietro to Rot, martyr and emblematic figure of Catholicism in Papua New Guinea; to the Italian religious Vincenza Maria Poloni, founder of the sisters of the mercy of Verona; and Bishop Ignazio Maloyan, killed during the 1915 Armenian genocide.

The Consistory took place in the consistor classroom of the Apostolic Palace. As is tradition, the act began with a brief prayer before entering formal deliberations.

Who is Carlo Acutis?

Carlo is known as “God’s influencer.” Born in London on May 3, 1991 and who died in Monza on October 12, 2006 at age 15 because of a fulminating leukemia, Carlo came from a accommodated family.

Since childhood, Carlo showed an extraordinary Catholic devotion, receiving the first communion at age seven. He studied in schools led by religious in Milan, where the family had established himself. Despite his short life, he combined his passion for computer science with a deep spirituality, creating a website documented Eucharistic miracles around the world. His life models were young saints such as Francisco and Jacinta Marto, Santo Domingo Savio and San Luis Gonzaga.

Beatified on October 10, 2020, his canonization was scheduled for April 27, 2025 in the jubilee of adolescents, but was suspended after the death of Pope Francis.

Who is Pier Giorgio Frassati?

The Italian Felsati cultivated during his adolescence a deep spiritual life, he became active member of the Catholic Action, the apostolate of prayer, the Eucharistic League and the Association of Young University Worshipers.

He decided to study mechanical industrial engineering to work near poor operators and entered the Turin Polytechnic where he founded a circle of young people who sought to make Christ the center of their friendship.

He led an austere life and destined for charities a good part of the money that his parents gave him for his personal expenses. His strength was in the daily communion and the frequent worship of the Blessed Sacrament.

He was an athlete, skier and mountaineer. He climbed the Alps and the Aosta Valley. He also lost the opportunity to bring his friends to the Holy Mass, the reading of the Holy Scriptures and the prayer of the Holy Rosary.

When he turned 24 years old, he was diagnosed with fulminant polyomyelitis, a disease that led him to death in just a week. He left for the father’s house on July 4, 1925 and had a funeral massive between friends and poor people.

San John Paul II beatified him in 1990 and stressed that “He proclaims, with his example, that he is ‘Holy’ the life that is conducted with the Holy Spirit, spirit of the beatitudes, and that only who becomes ‘man of the beatitudes’ manages to communicate to the brothers the love and peace”.
