Leo XIV will canonize Carlo Acutis on September 7 along with Pier Giorgio Frassati

On Friday, June 13, Pope Leo XIV presided over the first consistory of his pontificate granting the definitive approval for the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis, known as the “cyber and the Eucharist.”

Next to him, the canonizations of another 8 blessed were also confirmed. In the course of the Consistory, the Pope decreed that Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, along with Blessed Carlo Acutis, will be canonized on Sunday, September 7, 2025.

For their part, the Blessed Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan, Peter to Rot, Vincenza Maria Poloni, Maria del Monte Carmelo Rendiles Martínez, Maria Troncatti, José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros and Bartolo Longo will be elevated to the altars on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

This Consistory, held at the Vatican Apostolic Palace, had originally been summoned by Pope Francis at the end of February, while he was hospitalized, although at that time a specific date was not established for its realization.

Who is Carlo Acutis?

Carlo is known as “God’s influencer.” Born in London on May 3, 1991 and who died in Monza on October 12, 2006 at age 15 because of a fulminating leukemia, Carlo came from a accommodated family.

Since childhood, Carlo showed an extraordinary Catholic devotion, receiving the first communion at age seven. He decided to study mechanical industrial engineering to work near poor operators and entered the Turin Polytechnic where he founded a circle of young people who sought to make Christ the center of their friendship.

He led an austere life and destined for charities a good part of the money that his parents gave him for his personal expenses. His strength was in the daily communion and the frequent worship of the Blessed Sacrament.

He was an athlete, skier and mountaineer. He climbed the Alps and the Aosta Valley. He also lost the opportunity to bring his friends to the Holy Mass, the reading of the Holy Scriptures and the prayer of the Holy Rosary.

When he turned 24 years old, he was diagnosed with fulminant polyomyelitis, a disease that led him to death in just a week. He left for the father’s house on July 4, 1925 and had a funeral massive between friends and poor people.

San John Paul II beatified him in 1990 and stressed that “He proclaims, with his example, that he is ‘Holy’ the life that is conducted with the Holy Spirit, spirit of the beatitudes, and that only who becomes ‘man of the beatitudes’ manages to communicate to the brothers the love and peace”.
