Leo XIV names a bishop for the first time in Venezuela

Pope Leo XIV today made the first episcopal appointment of his pontificate for Venezuela, designating the presbyter Alexander Rivera Vielma as the new bishop of San Carlos, diocese that was in vacant headquarters since June 2024.

Mons. Rivera is currently Vicar General and pastor of San Miguel Arcángel de El Llano, located in the Andean state of Mérida. The new bishop, born on March 6, 1974, is from this region.
