Mons. Thadathil was born 1962 in Kottayam, a city located in the state of Kerala, in the southwest of India. After completing his ecclesiastical, philosophical and theological training at the Pontifical Seminary of San José in Alwaye, he obtained the degree in English literature at the University of Calicut and the doctorate in liturgy at the Faculty of Eastern Eclesiastical Sciences of the Pontifical Eastern Institute of Rome.
