Leo XIV greets the Agustina de Chiclayo community during his first Angelus in Castel Gandolfo

Pope Leo XIV directed an affectionate greeting to the pastoral community

“I greet the pastoral community ‘Blessed Agustín del Taramo’ of the College of San Agustín de Chiclayo, Peru, which is also in Rome to celebrate the jubilee,” said the pontiff at the end of the Mariana sentence, recited at the gates of the historic Apostolic Palace, which is part of the so -called Pontifical Villas that also includes gardens, a farm and other attached buildings.

Next to him was his personal secretary, the Peruvian priest Edgar Iván Rimaycuna, who visibly smiled when he heard the Pope’s greeting, sharing with him a moment of special emotion and memory.

The Agustino Group, arrived in Rome on the occasion of Holy Year 2025, is part of the former Diocese that the Pope presided over eight years as a bishop of Chiclayo, before being called to Rome by Pope Francis.

His greeting was loaded with closeness and gratitude towards a community that he knows deeply and with which he maintains affective links. In fact, on May 8, as soon as Pope be chosen, he decided to use Spanish in his first message to the world from the central balcony of the Lodge of the Basilica of San Pedro to greet his “dear” Diocese of Chiclayo.

Leo XIV will remain in Castel Gandolfo until next Sunday when he will return to the Vatican.

Although Pope Francis decided not to use residence as a personal holiday place and opened part of the complex to the public as a museum in 2016, Pope Leo XIV has partially resumed the tradition of spending a few days there during the summer, although he has interrupted some of his public commitments such as the General Audience of Wednesday.
