The Archbishop of Valencia (Spain), Mons. Enrique Benavent, has issued a decree by which he dispenses from the Lenten precept of abstinence this Friday, March 15, “in attention to the popular festivals that in the city and in numerous towns of the archdiocese are celebrated in honor of the Patriarch San José.”
This decision is made according to the canons 87 y 1253 of the Code of Canon Law that establishes the power to dispense from “both universal and particular disciplinary laws promulgated for its territory or for its subjects by the supreme authority of the Church”, in order to provide spiritual good for the faithful.
The dispensation from the precept of abstinence not only affects the diocesans of Valencia, but also extends “to all who, not belonging to it, find themselves in it for any reason.”
