The commitment of the monks of the Order of Minims during the time of Lent, preparatory to Easter, is to fast from all solid food for 40 days. To feed themselves, a community based in Germany decided to drink only a special type of beer that they made themselves.
The origin of the German brewing company Paulaner, founded in 1634 and one of the most important in the world, with a presence in 70 countries, is in this monastic community in Bavaria. One of their master brewers and sommelierMartin Zuber, tells this story that begins in the 17th century.
A community of monks from the Order of the Minims, founded by Saint Francis of Paula, arrived from southern Italy to found a new monastery in the monastery of Neudeck ob der Au in Bavaria (Germany). In German they were known as the Paulaner Monks.
