Lent 2024: Diocese uses beer to raise funds for homeless people

“Participating parish priests are starring in individual videos showcasing a favorite recipe or recipes and are counting on their flock and friends from far and near to show their support, making monetary donations as small as $10,” the diocese said.

All proceeds from the fundraiser go to Catholic Social Services’ (CSS) local anti-hunger efforts, including St. Vincent de Paul’s local kitchen, “as well as food pantries.” and other CSS programs.

Sandy Snyder, director of foundation relations and special events for the Diocese of Scranton, said that when launching the program the diocese “considered it experimental and hoped to raise $50,000 to call it a success.”

“We hit $50,000 pretty quickly, and the momentum continued,” he said. “We ended up with $171,697 raised in our first year,” so they decided to continue with the program.
