On Monday, the group announced a new diaper drive for local families in need and migrants. So far, it has raised more than $4,000.
“The response has been incredible,” he told the National Catholic Register on Wednesday. “I feel very blessed to be in this position where we can really help families in need in the community.”
Day’s group, a non-profit political organization committed to electing anti-abortion Democrats, she was scheduled to make her first delivery Wednesday night at a local pregnancy center, the Chicago Life Center, on the South Side.
“We are so excited to help out and provide these diapers,” she said, “because that’s what real Democrats do. They help people.”
Day admits that his idea of what a “true” Democrat is is not shared by many of the delegates and politicians inside Chicago’s United Center and McCormick Place this week. However, he believes that is all the more reason to work to get his message of life to his fellow Democrats.
“The party has left the pro-life Democrats”
Day and his colleagues are in Chicago, he said, to meet with Democratic Party delegates and activists, to listen and let them know that a pro-abortion Democratic Party does not speak for them.
“The party has left the Democrats pro-life,” he said. “We don’t want to leave. We love our party and want it to be strong and inclusive. We want to give away diapers to people in need. We are the true Democrats.”
In response to Democrats for Life’s diaper drive, Day has received a flood of stories from women across the country who have been harmed by abortion in the past. They expressed shock and horror that abortion has been celebrated as a positive moral good so far at the DNC. She said many thanked her for speaking out.
“One woman was 77 years old,” Day said. “She had an abortion decades ago and she is still suffering. The celebration of abortion at the Democratic National Convention is deeply disturbing. “It’s incredible how far the party has fallen.”
One moment from Tuesday’s convention was particularly troubling to Day. Kate Cox, a pro-abortion activist of Texas chosen to speak on behalf of the Texas delegation during the convention roll call, recounted her experience of having to leave the state of Texas to obtain an abortion after her unborn child was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a genetic disorder that has little chance of survival.
“One thing we’re overlooking here with these tragic stories is that in some of these cases women are paraded to demonstrate that abortion is a moral good,” said Day, who has worked for decades to expand pro-life influence within the Democratic Party.
“So I think we have to do a better job of educating people and listening to pro-life doctors who have been saving mothers and babies for decades. And we should not exploit women for political reasons,” Day said.
Day told the Register that she will attend the final two nights of the convention and is open to further discussions with current party members.
“So we continue to fight for our party to do the right thing,” he said.
