Notwithstanding the rule according to which only one Plenary Indulgence per day can be obtained (cf. Handbook of Indulgences, IV ed., norm. 18, § 1), the faithful who will have made the act of charity in favor of the souls in Purgatory, if they legitimately approach the sacrament of Communion a second time on the same day, will be able to obtain the Indulgence twice on the same day. plenary, applicable only to the deceased (it is understood within a Eucharistic celebration; cf. can 917 and Pontifical Commission for the authentic interpretation of the CIC, Answers to questions, 1, 11 July. 1984). Through this double oblation, a laudable exercise of supernatural charity is carried out, due to the bond through which the faithful who are still pilgrims on earth are united in the mystical Body of Christ, together with those who have already completed their journey, since “The jubilee indulgence, by virtue of prayer, is intended in particular for those who have gone before us, so that they may obtain full mercy” (Hope does not disappoint22).
But, in a more peculiar way, precisely “in the Jubilee Year we are called to be tangible signs of hope for so many brothers and sisters who live in conditions of hardship” (Hope does not disappoint, 10): therefore, the Indulgence is also linked to the works of mercy and penance, with which the conversion undertaken is witnessed. The faithful, following the example and command of Christ, are encouraged to carry out works of charity or mercy more frequently, mainly in the service of those brothers who are overwhelmed by various needs. Rediscover more precisely “the works of corporal mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, assist the sick, visit the prisoners, bury the dead” (A look of pity15) and also rediscover “the works of spiritual mercy: give advice to those who need it, teach those who do not know, correct those who err, console those who are sad, forgive offenses, bear patiently with annoying people, pray to God for the living and the dead” (ibid.).
In the same way, the faithful will be able to obtain the Jubilee Indulgence if they go to visit for an appropriate time the brothers who are in need or difficulty (the sick, imprisoned, the elderly in solitude, people with different abilities…), such as performing a pilgrimage towards Christ present in them (cf. Mt 25, 34-36) and following the usual spiritual, sacramental and prayer conditions. The faithful, without a doubt, will be able to repeat such visits during the course of the Holy Year, obtaining the plenary Indulgence in each of them, even daily.
The Jubilee Plenary Indulgence may also be achieved through initiatives that help in a concrete and generous way the penitential spirit that is like the soul of the Jubilee, rediscovering in particular the penitential value of Friday: abstaining, in a spirit of penitence, at least for one day of banal distractions (real and also virtual, induced, for example, by the media and social networks) and superfluous consumption (for example fasting or practicing abstinence according to the general norms of the Church and the specifications of the Bishops) , as well as granting a proportionate sum of money to the poor; supporting works of a religious or social nature, especially in favor of the defense and protection of life at each stage and its quality, of abandoned childhood, of youth in difficulty, of the elderly in need or alone, of the migrants from various countries “who leave their land in search of a better life for themselves and their families” (Hope does not disappoint, 13); dedicating an adequate portion of one’s free time to volunteer activities that are of interest to the community or other similar forms of personal commitment.
