Just as there are those who bring many of their work tricks home, Travis Block (Liam Neesonturned action hero on repeat) even instructs his granddaughter about whether a stranger is watching or following her, and how to check for escape routes.
Well, he may be a little paranoid, but he’s also obsessive-compulsive. Let’s say it all.
It is that in Black lightwhich Netflix has just uploaded to its platform, a film that when it premiered in Argentina was titled secret agentNeeson – who was already 70 years old, and no matter how much he says that he will abandon the genre, after a while he backs out – works for his friend the director of the FBI (Aidan Quinn, from Benny & Joon, Conflicted Hearts). Travis has, of course, a dark past. For years he has been dedicated to extracting undercover agents. Or to do things that, legally, ahem, would be difficult to explain or conceal.
But the new mission puts him on extreme alert. Travis begins to sense, and then discovers, that his FBI buddy is plotting unholy things against American citizens (oops!).
All from the request to take care of Dusty Crane (Taylor John Smith, seen in Sharp Objects). Crane alternates between alcohol and pills, but it is not known if he takes to forget or it is the other way around. There was a recent event that marked him with fire, and he is willing to tell the truth to journalism.
Those are good American citizens.
Thus, the plot of Mark Williams’ film will go from Crane on the run, and trying to meet Mira Jones (Emmy Raver-Lampman of The Umbrella Academy), to tell everything, to Travis dealing with him.
As in many of the action movies with Neeson, from relentless search (2008) To date, his character has some strong connection with the family – if he has any living members left. Here, it’s with his daughter (Claire Van Der Boom), who is divorced, and the granddaughter we talked about at the beginning (Gabriella Sengos).
Shooting, chases and the list goes on
All this to humanize, if the term fits, among so many chases, shootings, deaths, ambushes and betrayals, Travis.
Because Travis may have done bad things, but there is always, always, time to redeem himself. And to get away from hard work, and spend more and better time with his girls.
But his friend from the FBI does not accept his retirement, and that is where he sends him to look for Crane.
The rest is more or less predictable, if you have already seen the occasional Neeson movie with a gun in his hand. There are many well-filmed chases, and the victims number in the dozens.
Neeson here returns to work with director Mark Williams, who had directed him in Relentless revenge (2020), where he was a bank robber who decided to turn himself in, but was betrayed by two FBI agents.
It seems that between Neeson, Williams and those FBI guys, there is something personal.
