India: Half a million Catholics ask the government for better living conditions

Hundreds of thousands of Catholics in India are asking the government to improve living conditions in the country.

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Congress (SMCC), a lay organization of the Diocese of Chicago in the United States, presented the petition in late January to Kerala state chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan after a signature campaign aimed at address what the group described as an “unprecedented crisis” facing the Christian community.

Vijayan “was very concerned and assured to consider our demands,” SMCC president Biju Parayannilam recently told UCA News.
