One day after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Church celebrates the Memory of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Saturday, June 8, 2024).
The contiguity between both celebrations symbolically expresses the unity between the hearts of the Mother and the Son; while emphasizing that in Mary everything is always in reference to Jesus. This is precisely why the Church understands Mary as a safe path that leads to the Lord, and invites us to better know and love her Sacred Heart.

Key moments
The feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary was established by Pope Pius XII on May 4, 1944, through the decree Liturgical worship (The liturgical cult), about the cult of the Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Sacred Congregation of Rites of that time (dissolved in 1969) extended it to the entire Church and assigned August 22 as its own day.
The Roman Missal published after the Second Vatican Council (1969), moved the feast of the Immaculate Heart to the day after the Sacred Heart of Jesus (the celebration ranges between May 30 and July 3).
The intention of Pope Pius Pius the love of purity and in the exercise of virtues” (Decree Liturgical worship).
Decades later, Pope Saint John Paul II declared the obligatory observance of this holiday in honor of the Mother of God; That is to say, this memory is mandatory and should not be taken as optional – it must be carried out throughout the Catholic world.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart
In one of the apparitions of the Virgin in Fatima (1917), Our Lady said to Lucia, one of the three visionary shepherds: “Jesus wants to use you to make me known and loved. He wants to establish devotion to my Immaculate Heart in the world.” Then she added:
“To whomever I embrace I promise salvation and their souls will be loved by God like flowers placed by me to adorn his Throne.”
On a later occasion, the Virgin said to the three children: “Sacrifice yourselves for sinners and say many times, and especially when you make a sacrifice: ‘Oh, Jesus, it is for your love, for the conversion of sinners and in reparation of the sins committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary!’”
The great promise
Years later, when Lucía was a postulant at the Carmelite convent of the Doroteas in Pontevedra (Spain), the Virgin appeared to her again. On that occasion, Mary appeared with the Child Jesus in her arms and showed him her heart surrounded by thorns; Then she said to her: “Look, my daughter, my Heart is surrounded by thorns that ungrateful men pierce me incessantly with blasphemies and ingratitude.”
“You, at least, (continued the Virgin) try to console me and tell all those who, for five months, on the first Saturday, go to confession, receive Holy Communion, pray the Rosary and keep me company for 15 minutes meditating on the mysteries of the rosary in order to make amends, I promise to assist you at the hour of death with the graces necessary for your salvation,” concluded the Mother of God.
