Gastón Burlón and his family were returning from a visit to Christ the Redeemer, on December 12th, when the GPS took them to the Escondidinho favela, in Rio Comprido, as reported by the O Globo newspaper portal. Approached by two criminals, he was shot twice and the rented car he was driving lost control and ended up crashing into the wall of a house.
The family fell into despair. One of his sons even shouted that they had killed his father. Gastón, who was the president of the Argentine Student Tourism Chamber, was taken to the Souza Aguiar hospital, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
But after almost a month in hospital, he passed away this weekend. Gastón’s wife, Nadia Loza, who was with him at the time of the criminals’ attack, wrote on her social networks that she lost the love of her life.
The news about Gastón Burlón’s murder was highlighted on Argentine radio and television stations. In a statement on its social networks, the Brazilian Embassy in Buenos Aires regretted the fact.
(If I, as a carioca, could give tourists advice, I would say that, preferably, hire a local transport service. This is not the first time that the GPS indicates the wrong places, putting those who do not know the Marvelous City at risk).
