Important streets of various cities in Honduras were filled on August 16 with the participation of thousands of citizens in the “Prayer Walk for Honduras”, an initiative convened by the Catholic Church and the evangelical fellowship to raise prayers for the general elections of November 30.
According to data provided to ACI Press by the organizers, more than 230,000 people gathered in Tegucigalpa and about 80,000 in San Pedro Sula. In other locations such as La Ceiba, Danlí, Siguatepeque and Santa Rosa de Copán and another 40 municipalities also registered massive concentrations, although they still do not have official figures.

At the end of the day, Mons. José Vicente Nácher, archbishop of Tegucigalpa, and Pastor Gerardo Irías They read a message set in which they expressed their satisfaction because the country “has seen that it is possible to walk together. Diversity in freedom enriches us each other.”
The religious leaders stressed that it was not a political manifestation or in support of candidates, since the call was motivated “by faith in Jesus Christ and by a sincere love of Honduras. That has always been the straight intention of this walk.”

Transparency in the values of the candidates
In their pronouncement, they urged those who aspire to the presidency, as well as the 128 deputies to the National Congress, 298 mayors and 20 representatives before the Central American Parliament, to “publicly express what are the values that inspire them, as a new act of transparency and information.”

“Among us – caminants – there are diversity of people united by the values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Which, from our example, – as messengers of peace -, these values of mutual recognition and honorability are spread to all corners of the homeland,” they said.
On the other hand, they asked that the political and social sectors promote an “encounter and open dialogue, in search of the common good that we long for Hondurans.”

To the six million Hondurans who may vote in the next elections, the authorities directed a call to “exercise with respect and illusion their right to vote. Everyone, in their conscience, to opt.”
“The attentive look of citizens will accompany this democratic process, as we do every four years. We reiterate it, it is necessary and a Honduras is possible in which the truth, justice, freedom, honesty and equity is lived,” they said.
