How the new Tourist Consumer Protection program works

The Secretariats of Tourism, Environment and Sports and the Secretariat of Commerce launched the Tourist Consumer Protection Program with the objective of resolving claims linked to the contracting of tourist services.

How does the program work

According to the statistics collected by both secretariats, the most registered complaints related to tourist activity are those related to:

  • transfers,
  • accommodations that do not comply with what was agreed,
  • excursions
  • car rentals.

“The global market opens up extraordinary possibilities for us and it is essential that we add this service of consumer protection. The best tourism promotion we can do is a happy tourist, who feels cared for, with excellent services and tells it when they return to their country of origin,” said Daniel Scioli, Secretary of Tourism, Environment and Sports.

For her part, Yanina Martínez, Undersecretary of Tourism, pointed out that “we are in a wonderful moment for tourism in Argentina, with a 23 percent increase of arrivals from abroad in the first two months, and given the opportunity, with this program, to show that we are a reliable State, that cares and protects.”

Foreign tourism in 2024

In the first two months of 2024, more than 1.6 million of tourists arrived in Argentina generating an income of 1,232 million dollars, according to the first data emerging from the Argentine Tourism Information System.

“Incoming tourism continues to grow and consolidate its position as key source of foreign exchange to the country. We continue to work together with the private sector so that this growth remains strong, with concrete promotional actions in key markets,” said Yanina Martínez.

Of these total arrivals, more than half correspond to tourists from Chile, Brazil and Uruguay, while 10 percent had the United States as their country of origin.

Brazilian arrivals they rose 30 percent in relation to January-February of last year, while air travel was the largest in that same comparison.

The 895,636 foreign tourists arriving in January of this year account for a 23 percent increase over arrivals in the same month of 2023, while the 755,576 arrivals in February grew 10.8 percent in the year-on-year comparison.
