Although the Ford EcoSport was a pioneer among compact SUVs, Honda’s HR-V was the most desired of the category by years. Now the model changes completely to accompany the renewal of the brand in the local market.
One of the big differences with the previous model is that now the entire new range is imported from Brazil. Part of the success that this SUV achieved in the past was based on its domestic manufacturing for several years.
That HR-V had an unbeatable formula. It had the silhouette most sought after by users (SUV) and belonged to one of the best-regarded brands on the market. And even though it was the most expensive in the segment, its predilection was never in doubt: anyone who could stretch their budget to reach the HR-V did so.
Now the situation is very different, not only because of its imported status, but also because it was virtually offline: getting an HR-V in recent years was not an easy task.
The good thing is that the brand’s strategy has made a 180° turn. If it did not present a new model in four years, in the latter part of 2023 it launched the ZR-V, then this HR-V arrived, next month the launch of the new CR-V becomes official and a few months later the latest generation will arrive of the Civic in hybrid version.
The transformation of a success
The new model uses the same platform as the previous one. However, In its bodywork and interior everything is new. His style evolved towards a more sober figure but with modern and current lines, which give him a more solid posture and that accompany the current language of the company.
The dimensions are almost identical to those of the previous model but there is a huge difference in the use of space in the cabin. We go in parts, the driving position is very comfortable, with a driving position a little higher than before.

With these changes, the cargo capacity of the trunk was significantly reduced: it went from 437 to 354 liters. To make up for this loss, Honda devised a intelligent rear seat folding system (2/3 and 1/3) to leave a completely flat surface and gain cargo space.
The mechanics of the HR-V have also been changed and are the point that reasonably generates the most discussion. Now it has a gasoline engine 1.5 liters and 121 horsepower and 145 Nm torque. It is considerably less than the 140 HP and 174 Nm delivered by the 1.8 of the previous model. The box is still an automatic CVT and the drive is front.
The whole results in a response that leaves little flavor in departures and recoveries. Of course it’s enough for urban use, but when hitting the road you have to consider that to make a neat overtake you will have to hit the accelerator hard.
In that sense, the CVT automatic transmission does not help either, which generally gives a poor result with low torque engines such as this case.
On the other hand, the benefit is strongly seen in fuel consumption, which on average it is 7.2 L/100 km.
Dynamically it feels evolved, with a more robust front end and more precise steering. It has a set-up that prioritizes driving comfort but that transmits safety at all times. Special mention for the brakes.
This new era of Honda and the HR-V will not find the brand or the model with popular results as before, but with the quality and reputation that built its image.
