After five years Mitsubishi presented a new model in Argentina. This is the fourth generation of the outlander, a modern, striking SUV, with a good mechanical base and with Capacity for 7 occupants.
The Japanese brand, whose representation in the country is in the hands of the Antelo Group, suffered the consequences of the import restriction in the country in recent years. “Our dealer network survived as it could in these years,” said Manuel Antelo during the presentation of this new model.
Now with a very different scenario, Mitsubishi will seek to approach that time of glory in the 90s in the local market, when it was one of the most chosen imported brands in the country.
And to start that new path, he has his letter of presentation for those who stopped having the Japanese company on the radar. It is a good family alternative that can take advantage for its good price relationship compared to several of its competitors.
In Clarion We tried the only version for now available, which comes with a gasoline engine, CVT automatic box, four -wheel drive and, as mentioned before, a cabin with seven seats.
Japanese reliability
The Mitsubishi Outlander is a model that was born with the beginning of this millennium. It was presented in 2001 as a more urban alternative to the hitherto emblem model of the company, the 4×4 Montero. And in this fourth generation it appears more modern, luxurious and striking than ever.
This edition is favored by the alliance that Mitsubishi has with Renault and Nissan, more particularly from its Japanese partner, since it is built using the same base on which the X-Trail occurs, so it is inevitable to take it as a direct reference and comparison. But as an advance, if they don’t tell you, you don’t realize.

In general, when referring to a vehicle sharing a platform with another, similarities are quickly found. There are even cases in which only brand emblems are changed, a little design and not much more. The closest cases are those of the Nissan Frontier pickups and the Renault Alaskan or that of the Fiat Titano, of imminent premiere, and the Peugeot Landtrek.
Imported from Japan, the outlander looks large, strong and striking, especially because of the amount of chrome elements. The tube is grouped by the lights on two levels and the grill has a bright black termination with also chrome slats. This same termination is repeated in the windows frames.
Mitsubishi has chosen for this 20-inch wheel model (in the Nissan X-Trail they are 19 “), which contribute to that image of strength that transmits this SUV.
However, in this case there are many differences between the outlander and the X-Trail, which not only applies to the style of both but also to the tuning, to the behavior and the interior endings that generating very different perceptions.
The mechanical base, as stated, is the same. 2.5 -liter naphtero engine and 184 horsepower, together with a CVT automatic box with a sequential option that sets 8 gears. It is a propeller that responds optimally and a transmission that has mitigated the “cycloomotor effect” that CVT boxes usually offer. So far, the same as his cousin of Nissan. The rest changes a lot.
For starting, the integral traction system on demand offers up to 6 driving modes (echo, normal, earth, asphalt, mud and snow). It is a mitsubishi’s own development, called Super All Wheel Control or S-AWC, which is not only able to transmit the force between the front and the rear axis, according to the need, but it is able to control the turn of the wheels on each side to improve the traffic in curves.
The tuning of the suspensions is also specific and has its own elements and a behavior that en route is a delight. The outlander moves firmly and with a very good have in general. The bodybalances are minimal and the direction, of firm than soft touch, delivery good precision.
Part of that good support is also due to the big tires 225/45 R20. They have the size and proportions that a sports car would carry, so they are great responsible for those very good feelings that this Mitsubishi leaves when traveling en route.
But they are also the culprit of their great limitations outside the asphalt and the “tracheteo” that transmits in irregular cobbled or in folding soils, partly mitigated by the good work of the suspensions.
Inside the space is wide in the second row of seats and restricted in the third (recommended only for children), as in the X-Trail. But what changes decisively is in the perception of the interior. The Mitsubishi offers a more luxurious environment, with upholstery with seams that draw rhombuses and many “piano black” type appliques, which are very cute but those who quickly see the dust. Other details Simile metal and a good combination between digital and analog set up a sumptuous environment. Neither better nor that of the X-Trail, simply different.
Where the Mitsubishi Outlander is taken advantage of is in the price. It was already much cheaper than the competition when it arrived at the end of last year and then ratified it when the changes in internal taxes were announced. Today this model has a list price of US $ 55,000, which leaves it under its cousin the X-Trail ($ 62,500,000) or a Toyota SW4 ($ 67,082,000).
