Ford’s decision to call its Mustang first mass production electric generated a bit of controversy. Firstly, because many people still find it difficult to understand electrification in such emblematic models. And second, because the figure of this Mustang has things from the sports model, but it is not a muscle car.

However, that controversy is closed once it is understood that the advance of electromobility seems inevitable at this point and that this new model is not the battery-powered version of the best-selling sports car in the world.

The Mustang Mach-E interprets the coupe’s unmistakable aesthetic details in a five door body designed more for everyday use and with comfort characteristics typical of a family vehicle.

The shapes of the front and rear lights, the drawing of the plate that simulates the grill and the famous colt galloping on it are elements that unfailingly transport us to the Mustang.

The best of two worlds

These unmistakable features are located in a very well-crafted silhouette, with voluptuous but ultimately sensual proportions. A good result of the mix of a coupe with an SUVprioritizing the lineage of the first.

There are two details that at times can go unnoticed but that add a lot to the style. On the one hand, there are their giant 20” wheels (with a very original tire design), which gives it an intimidating stance.

And, on the other, the absence of handles of exterior doors that give it a clean and continuous side. To open the doors from the outside there are small semi-hidden buttons on the posts of each door.

But that striking, novel and attractive silhouette does not reach the levels of admiration that a Mustang Mach1 produces. But it also hides the highest levels of power and torque that Ford can offer in Argentina and excellent dynamic performance.

The version of the Mustang Mach-E that the oval brand sells in Argentina is the most powerful and sporty that it currently manufactures. It’s about the GT Performancea beast with two motors (one on each axle, which gives it four-wheel drive) that deliver 487 horsepower and 860 Nm of torque.

With these values ​​you can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. That is, it is half a second faster than a Mustang Mach1, thanks to the benefits of the immediate torque of the electric motors. The maximum speed is limited to 200 km/h because at high speeds the battery runs out very quickly.

The battery pack has a capacity of 91 kWh which allows it to declare an approved autonomy of 541 kilometers. These homologation conditions are impossible to emulate on a day-to-day basis, which brings the range to 480 kilometers, a very high number for being a battery-powered car. That performance takes away a little of the anxiety of running out of power that is so common among electric car users.

The purchase of the model in our country includes a “wallbox” type charger, with a power of 7 kW, which allows charging from 20% to 80% in just under 8 hours.

In our case, we experienced charging with a 50 kW charger (actually it worked at 46 kW) for 43 minutes: The result was 200 km of autonomy gained.

The first contact that Clarín had with this model was with a less powerful version. There we noticed a pleasant and comfortable drive, agile and dynamic, but not with the performance of a sports car. What’s more, it seemed a little strange to us that such a fast vehicle transmitted so little to the driver with the almost zero touch provided by the steering wheel or the brake pedal, but it is the norm among electric cars.

With this GT Performance version the story is very different. Not only because of the enormous levels of power and torque it offers, but also because of the sports tune-up. Clearly the suspension is much firmer and the tires chosen point to sporty performance.

The steering and brakes still do not give that sporty feel but the sensations change. The Mach-E behaves like a sports car in many ways. Leaving aside its acceleration, its traction capacity, cornering speed and gigantic braking power are notable.

And now, we can no longer ignore its acceleration. It’s one thing to read in the technical sheet that it goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. As a fact, it is almost what a Ferrari Roma (620 HP) needs to do the same.

But it is very different to live that experience. You don’t see it coming. You don’t expect that when you put your foot on the accelerator you can’t separate your head from the headrest. That a tickling It goes up all over your body. You have to take a deep breath and open your eyes surprised and shocked by the speed with which it accelerates. That you can’t wipe the smile off your face and that you want to do it again and again.

But the strangest thing is the environment in which you do it. Because it is a super technological interior, with a 15.5” screen with a vertical layout. The quality of this display is surely superior to that of your home.

This environment also provides a spacious and comfortable space, suitable for five adults. The driving position offers great support but also a enormous comfort. That is, it’s like going from 0 to 100 km/h from the sofa in a living room.

Due to price and accessibility that the country does not yet have in terms of charging infrastructure, the Ford Mustang Mach-E will for now be a vehicle for a few in our market. But it is the door to the future, not only of mobility in general but also to get to know what the brand has in store.
