Priest Javier Sánchez, of the Archdiocese of Zaragoza (Spain), died last morning, a victim of burns caused when his liturgical vestments caught fire with a candle during the Easter Vigil. According to the Spanish newspaper El Heraldo de AragónArchbishopric sources assured that the priest “tried to protect the nuns of the convent.”
“The priest tried to protect the nuns of the convent when the ember burned in the bowl that was used and that ultimately caused his death. Apparently a flammable substance had been used in the burning. The celebration took place in the interior of the convent,” indicates the source cited by the Spanish newspaper.
The priest, 60 years old, was parish priest of the church of San Gregorio, was a counselor of the Brotherhood of Humility and chaplain of the Franciscan Conceptionists of the Zaragoza neighborhood of Santa Isabel, according to a statement published by the Archbishopric.
