Sieg had been having a great race: he went from tenth place to first in a period of four laps, just before the last yellow flag of the race. We were so close…” he lamented.
It was the fifth victory in Mayer’s career, and the first of this season, and perhaps the one in which he did the least credit to take the first step of the podium: he led on just four different occasions, for a total of only five laps.
“It’s unreal. I mean, at one point I was like a second and a half behind. So to make up that much time in such a short amount of time is unreal,” Mayer said. And he added: “We have led the most important lap… We are not dominant by any means, but we gave our all to get to that point and win like that.”
