Tesla is recalling almost all vehicles sold in the United States, more than 2 millionto update software and fix a broken system that is supposed to ensure drivers are paying attention when using Autopilot.
The notice released Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators says the update will increase warnings and alerts to drivers and even limit the areas in which basic versions of Autopilot can operate.
The review follows a two-year investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) into a series of incidents that occurred while using the Autopilot partially automated driving system.
Several of these incidents ended with crashes that cost the lives of the occupants of Tesla models.
Misuse of technology
NHTSA says its investigation found that Autopilot’s method of ensuring drivers are paying attention may be inadequate and may lead to “foreseeable misuse of the system.”
The added controls and alerts “will further encourage the driver to adhere to their continued driving responsibility,” the notice says.
But safety experts say that while the recall is a good step, it still puts the blame on the driver and doesn’t address the underlying issue that Tesla’s automated systems have trouble detecting and stopping for obstacles that get in your way.
The recall affects all models of the Californian brand. They are the S and 3 cars, and the X and Y SUVs, which were manufactured between October 5, 2012 and December 7 of this year.
The shares of Tesla, the car company with the largest market capitalization, fell more than 3% on Wednesday.
Autopilot includes features called Autosteer y Traffic Aware Cruise Control. The function Autosteer is intended for use on limited access highways when not operating with a more sophisticated feature called Autosteer on City Streetsfor busier streets.
In any case, the system detects if the driver has his hands on the steering wheel. If you do not recognize that pressure, an alarm will alert you to do so. But several owners of Tesla models They have managed to cheat the system attaching some weight to the steering wheel rim.
Updating the software will limit the use of Autosteer. “If the driver tries to activate Autosteer “When the appropriate conditions are not met, the feature will alert the driver that it is unavailable through visual and audible alerts, and will not activate,” the recall notice explains.
Depending on the Tesla’s hardware, added controls include “greater prominence” of visual alerts, simplification of how to activate and deactivate the Autosteerand additional checks on whether the Autosteer It is being used off controlled access roads and when approaching traffic control devices.
All these updates will be done wirelessly and without having to go through the dealership. The Californian brand was a pioneer in the industry in remote software updates, as if updating the operating system of a cell phone.
